Tutors Rain Wu and James Shaw designed and developed a method for constructing large self-supporting structures out of modular aluminium box sections and aluminium tape as a joining device. In this workshop, the students spend the morning developing a design for a self-supporting arch using dry pasta and blu tack to create scale models in preparation for the afternoon’s construction. The students spend time understanding scale, basic engineering principles and modes of representation before embarking on their final design. In the afternoon, the students begin joining the base structure before constructing two separate sides of the arch, working their way up until the two sides meet in the middle, completing the installation.
